It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to our virtual home. I hope that you find it informative and inspiring to know that a boutique school can have a powerful influence on a student's development.
Building up IIS and watching it grow has been a tremendous privilege and I would like to take a moment to explain why IIS has been successful in nurturing students' learning spirits and why IIS is special.
Why IIS was Created
In Singapore, families have the luxury of choosing from a variety of big, well-established International Schools. As a Clinical Psychologist specialising in the well-being of children, I have worked with students who are often dismissed as "low achievers" partially due to time constraints and limited resources. At IIS, we are committed to helping our students get the chance they deserve to make significant contributions to our community and most importantly to feel good about themselves. Our students are an integral part of our teachers' day to day lives and our wish therefore is to be able to make a pivotal difference in their lives.
Why Two Educational Approaches?
In Singapore, academic excellence is part of everyday culture and heavily emphasised in school systems. Often children with learning differences or special needs, however, do not fit in the "cookie-cutter" definition of academic excellence and miss out on a variety of opportunities others may take for granted. Education can no longer take a "one size fits all" approach, which is why the faculty takes a Nurturing & Developmental Perspective on teaching. These perspectives offers students access to differentiated learning as and where necessary. We therefore are one of only two International Schools, who have a Mainstream and a Support Stream also known as the S.T.A.R.S. (Specialized Teaching And Responsive Students) Division.
Our Belief
We believe that every child deserves a good quality education and the opportunity to be successful human beings. With this belief goes our motto that every child can learn with the right teaching approach. We believe that it is our job as educators to foster love of learning.
We are honoured to be able to not only teach academics but to teach our students who we know they can really be. We know that they can be capable, competent, and respected individuals of our community. Finally, I look forward to meeting you and your children at IIS!
